The intrepid three went to a second Suffolk pub this week! This was a visit to the King's Head, Hadleigh. We were accompanied by our wives for an evening meal - and very good it was too. I enjoyed some excellent lamb koftas, followed by some local (almost blue) rib-eye steak; I am told that the belly of pork, which came with what looked like excellent crackling, was also excellent. Between us we finished off the pub's supply of Claret - that is until the wholesaler provides more; and that was very good too. Also in the pub were many friends and acquaintances enjoying food and drink in an excellent atmosphere - much conversation, no music, all age groups, helpful friendly staff.
One of the four chefs on duty last night was 'prepping' for a week of seafood delicacies this coming week. If you are in the area and like seafood (including local 'Colchester' oysters) then I would recommend a visit.

The Saracens Head, Newton Green
Our first excursion of 2008 was to the village (hamlet?) of Newton Green where the Saracens Head stands on the edge of the village golf course, next to a pond (a trap for the late leaving inebriate?).
The beer was good - Adnams and Greene King IPA; the staff friendly (she talked to us and took our photographs!); the locals not particularly friendly (no-one other than the barmaid spoke to us :-( ); the coffee good; and the surroundings very pleasant.

The Start
March 2008
Three men with a mission will set out on Wednesday evening to the first of their destination pubs. They have had a couple of years trying out the concept - now they are going to do it 'properly'. The rules are quite simple:
** They take it in turns to drive - and the driver chooses the pub.
** They only ever visit the pub once (whilst on this mission - good pubs are often revisited, with other friends, with wives, for lunch!).
This time, the three intrepid explorers of the public houses of south Suffolk intend to keep a record of the pubs they visit, maybe a photograph too. Something they can refer to, and argue about.
If you know of a pub that we haven't visited we would welcome your suggestions - the requirements are few: beer, seats, enough quiet for conversation, good coffee to end the evening with, within 30 minutes of Hadleigh. If we visit your pub be sure to say hello - you'll only have the one chance!
